Zencart vs. OSCommerce

Ok, so after a lot of research I’ve decided that OSCommerce is a little too old-school for me to use. I mean, when an open-source code framework hasn’t had an update in over 3 years I think we can officially call it unsupported. So that said, I’ve decided to switch to using Zen-Cart and merging that with Drupal. For those that don’t know about Zen-Cart, it is an offshoot of OSCommerce with about 10x the features and 10x the security updates.

Don’t get me wrong I think OSCommerce is still a great eCommerce solution, I just believe that if you had to start from scratch Zen-Cart would be the eCommerce solution to start off with. The main reason that I say this is because the code/html/css is just SOOOO much easier to understand in Zen-Cart than it is with OSCommerce. This is very important if you want your online store to look different than any old standard boring Zen-Cart or OSCommerce store. That said, we’ve just purchased our domain name and have started developing our new Drupal and Zen-Cartified hybrid site. I’ll continue to post our struggles and successes and any tips that we can offer.  I can’t give a great OSCommerce vs. Zen-Cart analysis but if there is enough interest I’d be more than happy to post my findings on the two eCommerce solutions and why I decided to go with Zen-Cart.  If so, just leave a comment and I’ll be sure to post.

I’m looking at these 2 solutions too. Been searching around and most info are pointing at Zen Cart.
Would love to have you post your coming experiences with Zen Cart. Hope you can nudge me when you’ve posted.. ;)

I’m also looking at both solutions. I’ve set both up in the past, but haven’t been able to make a decision, as I am going to finally go for it and start an ecommerce site. I look forward to follow your experiences as you get going. I’ll be posting my personal struggles and successes with it on my blog, http://www.timeforblogging.com . Good luck!

If you are just going to do an eCommerce site, I would highly recommmend you look at the layouts of both OSCommerce vs. Zencart. I’ve decided to actually use neither and go 100% with Drupal.

I have to say that Zen Cart is by far the best ep-com solution out there in my opinion. You hit it right when you talked about “keeping it up to date”.

The community over at Zen is super, and the technology is not only leading the pack, but the system as a whole is extremely stable. You can build some big stores and drive decent amounts of traffic with Zen (pretty good for “open source”).

I’ll say that the future of Zen has it moving in a direction that gets better with each passing day, at a pace far faster than the “other carts”. If you want a cart for the future, go with Zen.
